Grier/Woods Presbyterian Initiative Fellowships in Chinese Studies |
| Abstract: |
The Grier/Woods Presbyterian China Initiative was established to honor the memory of a donor's great grandparents and other family members who served as Presbyterian missionaries in China. As the name indicates, this initiative is intended to honor the donor's Presbyterian heritage; however, religious affiliation is not a factor in the selection process.
Two Fellowships are available to relieve faculty from teaching during one semester so that they can pursue research, most often off-campus and usually in China. One Fellowship will normally be allocated within the Department of Asian Studies. Another will be for open competition by all faculty members from the College of Arts & Sciences who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. The Fellowships are to be taken during the 2010-2011 academic year. The funds ($18,000 each) are paid to the recipient's home department and are for course release (and benefits) for a semester's leave.
Selection criteria: The recipients of the Fellowships will be selected by the senior faculty of the Carolina Asia Center's Advisory Committee. Selection will be based primarily on:
1. The academic merit and feasibility of the project.
2. The research track record or research potential of the applicant.
3. The expected outputs of the project.
4. The significance of the project in contributing to the knowledge and understanding of China.
Application process: Applicants should submit the original and seven copies of the application. In addition, a copy of the application should be provided as an email attachment to the Carolina Asia Center (address details below). Applications will include in order:
1. A 150 word abstract of the project.
2. A detailed research proposal, not longer than three pages (no smaller than 12 pt font, single spaced, with at least 1 inch margins), which describes the project and its significance. If the project is an extended one or is for the completion of a book manuscript, the applicant should detail and document the progress that has already been made. The proposal should indicate what the leave will contribute to the applicant' s career and development as a scholar and to the mission of the College.
3. A statement of the requirement for IRB approval and the applicants plans for acquiring informed consent and IRB approval if necessary.
4. A shortened curriculum vitae including a statement regarding past research leaves or other release time (a maximum of 4 pages). A list of publications for the previous five years should be appended.
5. A brief statement from the applicant's department chair or curriculum director providing endorsement and comments on the proposal. When there is more than one applicant from a department or curriculum the chair or director will be asked to rank the applicants.
