Grier/Woods Presbyterian Initiative China Travel Awards |
| Abstract: |
The Grier/Woods Presbyterian China Initiative was established to honor the memory of a donor's great grandparents and other family members who served as Presbyterian missionaries in China. As the name indicates, this initiative is intended to honor the donor's Presbyterian heritage; however, religious affiliation is not a factor in the selection process.
Two Awards will be made in 2010-11. These awards ($5,000 each) are for open competition by all faculty members from the College of Arts & Sciences who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. They are for faculty who wish to broaden or deepen their expertise and teaching on topics relating to China. Priority will be given to those who will add a new dimension to undergraduate course offerings.
Selection criteria: The recipients of the Awards will be selected by the senior faculty of the Carolina Asia Center's Advisory Committee. The selection committee will judge the applications primarily on:
" The merit and feasibility of the project.
" The expected outputs of the project in terms of adding a new dimension to undergraduate teaching.
" The contribution the award will make in furthering the applicant's teaching on China.
Application process: Applicants should submit the original and seven copies of the application. In addition, a copy of the application should be provided on a CD or as an email attachment to the Carolina Asia Center (address details below). Applications will include in order:
1. A 150 word abstract of the project.
2. A proposal, not longer than two pages (no smaller than 12 pt font, single spaced, with at least 1 inch margins), which describes the project and its significance for undergraduate teaching.
3. A proposed budget
4. A shortened curriculum vitae (a maximum of 4 pages). A list of publications for the previous five years should be appended.
5. A statement of the requirement for IRB approval and the applicants plans for acquiring informed consent and IRB approval if necessary.
6. A brief statement from the applicant's department chair or curriculum director providing endorsement and comments on the proposal. When there is more than one applicant from a department or curriculum the chair or director will be asked to rank the applicants.
